Redwood Shores
Redwood Shores is a lovely
master-planned waterfront community located just across the highway from the
City of Belmont. The area started development in the 1960’s and interestingly,
both San Carlos and Belmont turned down annexing Redwood Shores to their
borders. Redwood City signed on so it became a neighborhood of Redwood City even though there is no direct road connection between the two areas.
There are a myriad of homes styles—apartments, condos, townhomes and single-family homes, many on waterways. You’ll note landscaped median areas and a lack of cars parked along the streets, which allows for a much more open, green and inviting appearance.
There are a host of recreational activities—kayaking, rowing and paddle boarding in the main lagoon or enjoy a nice walk or bike ride around the paths of Redwood Shores. There are also access points for the levy paths that border the sloughs that surround Redwood Shores.
One of the interesting features of Redwood Shores are the college rowing team races that take place on the main waterway between the months of February and May. Also the waterways are a natural bird migration point so at any time you’ll see a variety of ducks, pelicans, egrets, cormorants, herons and a host of other species of birds.
Redwood Shores is also home to technology companies Oracle and Electronic Arts, but many other companies including Nintendo and RIM, keep a sizable presence in the shores.
Pacific Athletic Club (and
resort) is a wonderful family facility, and it’s located adjacent to the
Marketplace which is home to Nob Hill Foods and many other restaurants and services. There is also a new library for the residents
to enjoy. There are two newer elementary schools in Redwood Shores and their test scores are exemplary (Sandpiper and Redwood Shores Elementary).
